Dog and His Friend - WhatsApp stories

A man and his dog were walking along a road. The man was enjoying the scenery, when it suddenly occurred to him that he was dead.

He remembered dying, and that the dog walking beside him had been dead for years. He wondered where the road was leading them.

After a while, they came to a high, white stone wall along one side of the road. It looked like fine marble. At the top of a long hill, it was broken by a tall arch that glowed in the sunlight.

When he was standing before it he saw a magnificent gate in the arch that looked like mother-of-pearl, and the street that led to the gate looked like pure gold. He and the dog walked toward the gate, and as he got closer, he saw a man at a desk to one side.

When he was close enough, he called out, 'Excuse me, where are we?'

'This is Heaven, sir,' the man answered.

Would you happen to have some water?' the man asked.

Of course, sir. Come right in, and I'll have some ice water brought right up'.The man gestured, and the gate began to open.

'Can my friend,' gesturing toward his dog, 'come in, too?' the traveller asked.

'I'm sorry, sir, but we don't accept pets.'

The man thought a moment and then turned back toward the road and continued the way he had been going with his dog.

After another long walk, and at the top of another long hill, he came to a dirt road leading through a farm gate that looked as if it had never been closed. There was no fence.  As he approached the gate, he saw a man inside, leaning against a tree and reading a book.

'Excuse me!' he called to the man. 'Do you have any water?'

'Yeah, sure, there's a pump over there, come on in..'

'How about my friend here?' the traveller gestured to the dog.

There should be a bowl by the pump.'

They went through the gate, and sure enough, there was an old-fashioned hand pump with a bowl beside it. The traveller filled the water bowl and took a long drink himself, then he gave some to the dog.

When they were full, he and the dog walked back toward the man who was standing by the tree.

'What do you call this place?' the traveller asked.

This is Heaven,' he answered.

'Well, that's confusing,' the traveller said. 'The man down the road said that was Heaven, too.'

'Oh, you mean the place with the gold street and pearly gates? Nope. That's hell.'

'Doesn't it make you mad for them to use your name like that?'

'No, we're just happy that they screen out the folks who would leave their best friends behind.'

Bird In Hand - Teenage Dilemma

It seems the world is full of fools when you are in your pre-teen and teenage. Life has its ways to assist you and guide you, in its humble & teaching methodologies. Every time, when, I know it all attitude comes up, there it is – a Life Lesson.

Being in India, a lower-middle-class family with a small parental business of snack shop, there was NO way out financially (10 hungry mouths to feed), But to succeed academically.
Parents, limited formal education should not be an impediment for us. Their practical experience itself is enough to learn from. They have their lives, devoted to raising their 4 kids, I am the youngest.
Not knowing, what, where, how & when?

Still mind thinketh, lying down in bed with elder brother and reflecting on the economical status of the home. Counting in the home today we have 4 Metal beds, One Luna (Small cc moped), 2 bicycles, 1 TV, One common study table (for ironing, for study, for table fan).

We will have a separate bed & study table for each one of us as we grow older. Nice Starline Car for family & a Hero Honda SS bike (Just like we learned on, kind neighbor uncles Hero Honda SS). Our own phone at home (not PP – public phone) Starry eyes, dreaming with open eyes & seeing things in reality. Being the youngest I was little pampered though (Still am though, a lot). Dreaming, with academic results propelled further ahead.
Sheer determination & sacrifice of mother & hard, very hard labor work of father (staying away from family for days in stretch), are the right role model (as I reflect upon now).

But as we all are in puberty, I know it all, my friend knows better, you do not understand “Ma” & “Pappa”.

I relate a story, I very commonly read & share with students I interact. Here it is –

In a small village, there was a very knowledgeable & wise old man. Very much respected by all the families of the village & was always looked upon for guidance and counsel by all. Especially when they needed True judgment & unbiased opinion.
Since he was a man of truth, but you know the teenagers, always trying to prove their point of view as correct. Generally in a society, we find few notorious and mischievous kids, who just could not handle the statements from their parents at home, “We will get the truth, you know how? by old man”. They all got together and made a pact. We will make fool out of this old man and have him speak lie to us. So that we can prove to all villagers that he is NOT a person to look up to & he does lie, not worthy of villagers’ respect and attention.
First thing in the morning they planned to make a visit to his humble kutiya just outside the village, closer to the jungle. They made a plan to meet him and get their queries answered and doing so trick him. Kids went up to him, before reaching his kutiya, they picked up a small bird from the bush nearby.
Lots of people have already queued up to meet the old man. They all were very impatient, but no choice had to wait for their turn.
Finally, their turn came, old man waived them to walk towards him. The old man could sense the intentions of a prank. Kids were excited and asked a question, “Old man, Old man, tell us do you always speak the truth?“. He humbly replies, “Sure do, son“. All kids burst out laughing, stating “Old man, we are here to prove you wrong“. With a gentle and serene smile, Old man gestured to ask their question. Holding the small bird in his back, the leader kid asked, “Old man Old man, tell us, what do I have in my hand?
The old man gently answered, “You have a bird in your hand, son
kids, shocked. Ok! , kid with a loud voice now (so that all other villagers present can hear them clearly), the trick question came “Tell us, if the bird is dead or alive?
The old man knew, he will be posed with such a situation, if he says “bird is dead“, the kid will let it fly & he will be fooled. And, if he says “bird is alive“, the kid will crush the bird in his back to show him a dead bird. They will make fool of him.
But, the old man was not only intelligent and compassionate, he was so erudite. In his lifetime experience & learning uttered the answer.
Dear son, you are holding a bird in your hand that is sure. But, its LIFE or DEATH is All in your hands“.

Just like the kids, who just could not get their acts together, instead, they tried to put others down.

Kindness - Payback

 Positive,

I didn’t want to start this article with a negative, hence wrote positive at the start. Well, the current pandemic has made life tipsy turvy for many and has also opened up many NEW paths & SELF Reflection opportunities.

Time: 11:30 am (Day 1)

It’s not that, I am not following any safety measures or ignoring them, you know over the long period of isolations and socially away, kind of makes things a little edgy. Two weeks ago met my childhood friend, Pinku in his shop (a trader of automotive parts), while everybody there was using sanitizer & wearing masks. We were sitting quite far though, another friend, Shivu joined in (a little loud in tone & expression of emotions), demanded “Dost Chai pilao yaar” (Friend, let’s have Tea), and he joined us sitting very close to my friend. We all had tea, and in then I had to rush to pick up my young dad (77yrs age) from his restaurant, 30 km away in a village.

Time: 6:30 pm

Since its Ganesh Mahotsav happening, in the evening our entire family (6 Adults, 3 Kids ) got together at one home for aarti followed by dinner.

Time: 7:45 pm

Saw three miss calls from my friend, Pinku. Drops of stress popped up on my forehead, my mother caught it (can’t hide from moms). I called back, he said our friend Shivu is running a fever and is very high (104) & his rapid test for COVID is Positive. We all got exposed in a slight slip & social manner.

Time: 9:30 pm

Told my wife about the same, she was quick in responding, please have you get tested.

Time: 2:00 pm (Day 2)

My friend updated, me he is also having symptoms and the rapid test is positive. And confirmed, 3 other friends from the same light, social, so thought of a safe “Tea” ceremony, all are identified COVID Positive. Made me think, reflect, slow down, and retrospect my priorities of life. Made me start thinking more about the aspects of gratitude & thankfulness. I got myself home quarantined for 7 days.

Few family members who were panicked in the initial days of lockdown in March till now, I received emails, messages, and calls from them to motivate me & give a compassionate suggestion to stay positive.

Time: Morning Day 3 to 9

I received Positive vibes from members whom I was counseling over the years, I got similar or rather the same positive words back from them. If “End” is well, “All” is well, made our group of friends, family & acquaintances (nearly 100+)  think through and be more cautious & be more serious in taking care of each other following health protocols.

I stepped out of home quarantine with NO symptoms what so ever.

  • Take away is, “Payback” happens but in Natures’ own time. Stay true to your words.

THE DAY I WAS PROMOTED TO BE “TEACHER”

The day we celebrate, Teacher’s Day in respect of the former president of India Sarvepalli RadhakrishnanWell, I have been doing the rhetoric sending message approach for many years (Sometimes with full sincerity & at times partially) to wish Teachers Day.

Yesterday I made my first phone call to my childhood language teacher, who stay near our home & does visit my mother frequently (a good friend of hers now). She only said one statement “Aashirvaad to All”.  My two kids do learn now & then, grammar and language tips from her.

When I was in standard 10th, the same teacher met me at school and asked me can you visit my home, to clear the doubts of a few students in Maths. I readily agreed, back then NO phones and NO Bikes, dressed up decently, combed (oiled hair) reached my teachers home at sharp 5 pm to assist. She asked me to wait for a few minutes in the front hall and went back in to continue her class. And after a very long 5 mins (for me it appeared ages) she called me in another room (her dinning + classroom). When I entered the hall, I could see back of 5 or 6 students seating on the floor & a black rubber board was hanging in front of them & Mam was standing there, waved me to walk in. Shivering, sweating, trembling reached near the rubber board. She asked me to explain the chapter of Trigonometry (NO Doubt clearing as she mentioned, But teach Complete Chapter). I hesitantly collected chalk from her and the moment I turned around, I was stunned and stoned, All the students seating there were my school classmates. My heart sank and somehow saved myself from smirks and looks from them, and initiated teaching. That day I was promoted to be a Student-Teacher.

Fast forward two and a half decades.

Currently being a faculty and associated with many school students, I remembered my initiation time. Kindness and confidence I was bestowed upon by my teacher, I feel the same for my students now. A sincere Pranaam and Thanks to my Teacher.

Sincere Obeisance and Pranaam to Om Swamiji for allowing me to write in his forum. Always seeking his guidance and his presence with us.
